bandarpunch or bust: oxygen deprivation can be fun

By the time you read this, we will be somewhere in the Garwhali Himalaya moving steadily toward our mecca: Bandarpunch (also spelled Bandarpoonch and Banderpunch, which means “tail of the monkey”).  This is the preeminent snow peak visible from Mussoorie on clear days and I must admit I’ve gazed at it more intently since we signed up to try and climb it.

Bethraham has never been above 10,000′ before, and Bandarpunch tops out at 20,722′. It’s not a foregone conclusion that we’ll all summit, as weather and altitude sickness are neither predictable nor negotiable at those altitudes.  Already, the early onset of monsoon season likely means we’ll see snow earlier than we’d like.  But we have good guides and good group dynamics on our 23-person team, which will come in handy while holding someone’s hand so they can poop on a snowy slope without sliding away.

So we would appreciate your prayers for safety, health and good weather.  If all goes well, we’ll be back in Mussoorie on July 3rd before flying to Atlanta on the 6th.  Until then…
